OS X 10.4.8 (Intel) and Illustrator crashes

Since I updated my Intel-based Mac to OS X 10.4.8 I've had weird crashes every time I try to use the pathfinder in Illustrator.

I found a solution to this problem in Adobe's Support Knowledgebase [link] but the workaround doesn't help me much since it only seems to work one time before Illustrator starts to crash again.

Not being able to use the pathfinder leaves me crippled since I use it all the time when working in Illustrator.

Does anyone know of another solution that gives a more permanent fix to this problem (except backing to 10.4.7)?
